My family started raising Dachshunds in the early 70's. I can't remember a time when we didn't have puppies. Back then, you were lucky to get a few hundred for a pet quality pup in the south. You advertised in the local newspaper, and we could not raise too many because there just wasn't a high demand in our area. It was difficult to find unrelated animals. And then came the internet!
Once we had the internet, we could advertise a little easier and to folks outside of our immediate area. Internet also opened the option to find better breeding dogs. It is hard to believe that just 5 or 6 years ago, breeders were still selling nice pets for under $1000. What changed???? Social Media! As more folks got online and were able to find pets outside of their area, buyers would travel states away from their high-cost area (NYC, Chicago, California) to get pets from low-cost areas. So, the same pet they would pay $6000 for at their local pet store was only $1000 in TN.
The reason I thought to do this site is because the FAQ on my dog selling sites brought in more clients than any pic I ever posted. My no-nonsense way of looking at the business and my forthrightness was a big hit with buyers. I have spent the last 10 years taking calls at all hours to help my clients thru tough situations. From a hard birth with no vet around for miles, to a snake bite! I know the peace it has brought to all of them to have me there as a friend who is always available to help them through the tough times.
As with many breeders, I have changed what I raised multiple times. Over the years I have raised Dachshunds, Dobermans, Dalmatians, Corgis, & Labradors. My mother also did Chihuahuas, Australian Shepherds, and Basset Hounds. I can tell you that the restarts were very costly, but I also have experience to small and large breeds.
I have been lucky enough to have crossed into the AKC show world. I own & have finished more than one dog for their AKC Championship. So, I can provide advice on how to break into showing dogs as well and explain the advantage of having better bloodlines in your business.
Making money selling dogs has never been my main goal. I can honestly say that because by time I was making any real money, it was after I was already headed down the path I am on now. My goal is raising a better quality of dog and allowing all breeders to get that same bloodline. You would think this would be a popular goal, but it is not. Those with great bloodlines, don’t tend to share. Those who are willing to share their bloodlines, tend to have a lower quality dog. Now I am not saying I am the ONLY person who has this goal, but there was actually an article in the show dog magazine, Canine Chronicles that chastised champion dog breeders for hoarding their bloodlines.
I hope this explains a little about my history and goals for breeding dogs. I am always an open book, so feel free to submit any questions!
